Dr Kevin Flanagan

Dr Kevin Flanagan

Kevin is a career specialist in Natural Language Processing (NLP). He began by leading successful software projects that analysed large text bases for investigative intelligence purposes. By combining computational linguistics with foreign-language fluency, he went on to earn a PhD in Translation Technology, which led to his role as Principal Research Engineer at RWS, one of the world’s largest providers of language technology and services.

Kevin has extensive experience designing and delivering software systems, from academic and exploratory NLP applications to large-scale commercial platforms serving hundreds of thousands of users worldwide. His work spans system architecture, deployment, and long-term operational support, with a particular focus on building robust, maintainable systems that effectively bridge research and production environments.

Working with our partners at C3DS, Kevin has led the development of the tool Climate News Tracker uses to track and monitor broadcast coverage of climate news.
